A Fine Passel of Authors

Hey blog fans! Just wanted to let you know that today is my inaugural post over at the newly-established The Cheesecake Thickens. Like their namesake, posts here will pack a whole lot of richness into just a small slice (say, a 500 word or less slice, typically.)

Keven Newsome, Diane Graham, Kat Heckenbach, PA Baines and I would be very grateful if you'd give us a gander. Posts will come Monday-Wednesday-Friday, so hopefully that schedule will hit the sweet spot between often enough and manageable.

Genre Mashups and a Revelation

OK, so maybe "revelation" is a bit of a strong word. More of a "huh" would probably be accurate. Anyway, I was looking at the  Publisher's Weekly blog post  that Marcher Lord Press shared, where PW gave a little press to Kerry Nietz's new release Amish Vampires in Space . Now, I'm glad for any press Kerry is getting--it can only help his visibility, and even if people are mocking (which PW wasn't) it generates traffic. Good for him! The PW article was talking about genre mashups and how authors seem to be unabashedly having fun with them. I can support writing for fun. It's generally what I do. The other three books in the PW article included romance as one of their genres pulled into the mix, and in the midst of my moment of mirth over the ridiculousness of making a character a werecuttlefish (like werewolf, but yes, shapeshifting to a fish) I had that "huh" moment. Following the Rules

I have always been ridiculously bound by rules. I'm that person who would rather die than take the department store shopping cart out of the store and into the hallways of the rest of the mall. After all, the cart says right on it: Do not remove from store. So you don't. It's that simple. Instead, you slog through the mall with thirty-five pounds of shopping bags while trying to keep a hold of the hand of a preschooler and bellowing like a drill sergeant at the two older boys who are chasing each other in circles, threatening to barrel into every senior citizen within a hundred yards. That wouldn't break any printed rules. So what does this have to do with writing? The more I write, and the more I seek feedback on my writing, the more I come into contact with the current "rules" that govern fiction. Geek Girl T-Shirt Design-Your Opinions Requested

 I've been batting this idea around for over a year, now, and I think I've finally got it worked out. Of course, this being my idea, I think it's cool, but as with my books, my opinion doesn't matter much. What I want to know is if people would buy this design if I offered it for sale.  I think I will probably load the text designs to Zazzle, just to give them a place to live until conference time. But come Realm Makers: 2014, I am going to have to print a batch to sell, and that means picking a color or two. That's where you come in! In the comments below, I'd love to hear what color you'd buy, if any. And if you wouldn't spend any amount of money on something like this, I want to hear that too. So please, comment away!
